Other artists may work recalling memories and emotions from spectators, instead, Eliasson’s
modern art manages to be more evolved yet more straightforward. New and unfamiliar
environments lead modern people to unusual self awareness, forcing reflections about
different kind of lifes.
That is how Olafur Eliasson’s works of art ended up in one of the most beautiful buildings in
Florence, for his biggest Italian exhibition.
“In Your Time” is in fact set in Palazzo Strozzi, built in the 15° century and deemed one of
the most representative of the Italian Renaissance and Florence-based architecture.
It has been open since September 2022, yet it already had 140.000 visitors, breaking italian
records for contemporary art exhibitions.
The Danish Icelandic artist started his career in 1996, and worked throughout his life with
architects and geometry experts, leading its optical illusion-based pieces of art to be
exhibited at MOMA, Tate Modern and its own Institute for Spatial Experiments in Berlin.
Relevant to every artworks is the peculiar use of light, completely changing the aspect of the
rooms the exhibitions are set into, evoking mystic discomfort.
“In Your Time” is setted in two floors of Palazzo Strozzi, and it was created to mix and melt
modern art and architecture altogether. Thanks to the use of light, colors and water, the
spectators’ eyes become part of the artwork.
“Your view matter” is one of the most exciting artwork of the exhibition. Presented for the first
time here, Eliasson explores visitors’ immersion through VRs. Music, sounds and lights let
us perceive the childhood’s sensation of being curious and excited about the world around
us, always looking for meanings.
“There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in”, said
Graham Greene. And maybe, thanks to Eliasson Olafur, we can peacefully accept whatever
the future is bringing us.
